What this test measures

The Maslach Burnout Inventory is the gold-standard research tool for measuring occupational burnout. It identifies three core components: emotional exhaustion (the depletion of emotional resources), cynicism or depersonalisation (disconnection from work and people), and personal efficacy (the sense of competence and accomplishment). This adaptation is for educational self-reflection only.

What the Burnout Assessment measures

Your answers are scored across 3 core dimensions:

  • Emotional Exhaustion

You show a moderate level of Emotional Exhaustion. You feel the fatigue of ongoing demands but have not yet crossed into the depleted state where recovery feels impossible. This is the zone where intervention is most effective — before the tank fully empties.

  • Cynicism

You show a moderate level of Cynicism. You have some scepticism and disengagement, but it has not yet consumed your sense of meaning or your care for the people around you. Catching this here prevents the slide into full disconnection.

  • Personal Efficacy

You show a moderate level of Personal Efficacy. You have moments of feeling capable and productive, but also periods where your confidence in your own effectiveness wavers. Sustaining and building on your competence will protect your wellbeing.

How to read your results

Results from the Burnout Assessmentare for self-reflection and personal insight. No personality test captures the full complexity of a person, and your result is a snapshot of how you answered today — not a fixed label. Use it as a starting point for understanding patterns in how you think, decide, and relate to others, then take what resonates and leave what doesn’t.
